Interior Design

CONSIDER IT A HOBBY

Had I not gotten into graphic design I might have become an architect. Interior design and construction are hobbies of mine. In the images below you see two very different approaches. Inspired by the early-century Bauhaus movement and the post-modern work of architect Michael Graves, I redesigned our first home, a ’60s ranch, to look like this:

Our current home, a 1920s farm house, required a different approach. Here I’m adopting the mission style as in our dining room where I’m reintroducing oak trim along with period frames of my own design.

FROM HOBBY TO CAREER

I have had the distinct pleasure of being able to bring the skills I obtained with our home renovations to bare on work-related endeavors. Here you see a proposal I made for renovating what had been a bank lobby into space for a communication center in one of Consolidated Communications’ Texas locations. To bring further realism to the plan, I converted the floorplan into a three-dimensional drawing, shown below.

In another instance, I was approached to design the interior of the Consolidated Communications Communication Center in Mattoon, Illinois. The objective was to create a visual presents as viewed from a busy intersection situated along the front corner of the building. To achieve this, I rotated the back wall of the retail space 45 degrees and introduced blue neon lighting behind glass blocks flanking the pay counter and the company logo. Another objective was to maximize the amount of floor space dedicated to retail. To this end I was able to create a floorplan, which while complying with ADA standards, kept the restroom, break/conference room, mechanical room, storage room, coat closet and office down to approximately 25 percent of the rented space.

My part in the development of this project was to create a committee-approved floorplan, including the design of the pay counter and free-standing slatwall displays. To get buy in, I built a scale model of the space which the company executives found helpful in visualizing how exactly their dollars would be spent. I also choose the carpet pattern, paint colors, lighting, stains and surface laminates to complete the look. See it from conception to completion in the animation below.
